CIBIL loan closure correction guide by WeCredit

Fix It in the Right Order

Check the fresh report, collect your NOC, complain to the lender, raise a CIBIL dispute, and verify the updated report. This order keeps your evidence clean and makes escalation easier if the status is still wrong.

You paid the final EMI. The lender confirmed that nothing more was due. You may even have received a message saying the loan was closed.

But when you check your CIBIL report, the loan still appears as active.

That can be worrying, especially if you plan to apply for fresh credit. Sometimes, the lender’s latest update has not reached your credit report. In other cases, an incorrect balance, missing closure date or reporting error needs correction.

This guide explains what to check, how to get your loan NOC, how to raise a dispute and where to complain if the problem is not resolved.

Quick answer: First, download a fresh credit report and check the account status, current balance, amount overdue and “Date Reported.” Obtain the NOC or closure letter from the lender. If the account is still incorrect after the lender has had a reasonable opportunity to report the closure, complain to the lender in writing and raise a CIBIL dispute. Keep both reference numbers until the correction appears in a new report.

What Should You Do Right Now?

Why Is a Closed Loan Still Showing Active in CIBIL?

Your lender receives your payments and reports account information to credit information companies such as TransUnion CIBIL. CIBIL uses that information to prepare your report.

Think of it like updating an address in two places. You tell your electricity provider that you have moved, but your old address remains on another company’s records until the electricity provider sends the update. In the same way, closing the loan in the lender’s system and seeing “closed” in your credit report may not happen at exactly the same time.

Common reasons include:

  • The final payment was made recently and the next update is still pending.
  • A small fee, interest amount or charge remains in the lender’s records.
  • The lender reported an incorrect status or balance.
  • The closure date was missed in the data sent to CIBIL.
  • Your latest report was generated before the lender submitted the update.
  • The loan appears under the name of a partner bank or NBFC rather than the app you used.

CIBIL says recent payments or closures may take time to appear. It also cannot directly change lender-reported information without the relevant credit institution’s confirmation. Therefore, contact both the lender and CIBIL when a correction is needed.

What Is a Loan NOC?

A loan NOC, or No Objection Certificate, is a lender-issued document confirming the loan’s closure or zero-dues position, subject to its wording.

You may also hear terms such as:

  • No Dues Certificate
  • Loan Closure Letter
  • Closure Certificate
  • No Dues Letter

Lenders may use these names differently, so read the document rather than relying on its title. An NOC is useful evidence, but it does not automatically edit your CIBIL report. The lender must still confirm or report the correction.

How to Get or Download a Loan NOC

The exact process depends on the lender. Try these options in order.

  1. App or website: Look under Documents, Statements, Loan Details, Closure Letter or NOC.
  2. Registered email: Search the lender’s name with “loan closure,” “NOC” or “no dues.”
  3. Customer support: Write from your registered email and include your name, mobile number, loan account number and final-payment date.
  4. Branch: If available, carry ID, the account number and payment proof. Ask for an acknowledgement.
  5. Grievance officer: If support fails, use the official grievance details and quote your earlier complaint number.

If you borrowed through a digital loan app, identify the actual lender named in the loan agreement or Key Facts Statement. Your credit report may show that bank or NBFC’s name, and it may be the correct organisation to contact.

Check These Details on Your NOC

Verify your name, loan account number, lender’s legal name, closure date, zero-dues confirmation, issue details and any stated conditions.

If your name, account number or closure date is wrong, ask for a corrected document. Do not edit the NOC yourself.

Check These Fields in Your CIBIL Report

Do not look only at the word “active.” Review the complete account entry.

Report fieldWhat to check
Account statusWhether it incorrectly remains active or open
Current balanceWhether an amount is still being reported
Amount overdueWhether an overdue amount appears incorrectly
Date closedWhether the closure date is present and correct
Date ReportedHow recent the lender’s last update is
Lender nameWhether it matches the lender or lending partner in your documents
Payment historyWhether your final payments were reported correctly

Remember that a closed loan does not have to disappear from your report. It can remain as part of your credit history. The goal is to make its status, dates and balances accurate.

How to Fix a Closed Loan That Still Shows Active

Step 1: Download a fresh credit report

Use the latest available report; an old PDF shows only the information available when it was generated.

Step 2: Compare the dates

Compare the final-payment date, NOC date and Date Reported. If the report predates the lender’s closure update, the mismatch may be temporary.

Step 3: Confirm that nothing remains payable

If a balance appears, ask for a final statement. Do not pay an unexplained amount merely to remove the active status.

Step 4: Complain to the lender in writing

Attach the NOC, final-payment proof and relevant report section. Ask the lender to confirm:

  1. Whether the account is closed in its system
  2. Whether the balance is zero
  3. When the corrected information was or will be sent to CIBIL
  4. The complaint reference number

Avoid sharing passwords, PINs, OTPs or unnecessary financial documents.

Step 5: Raise a CIBIL dispute

Log in to myCIBIL, open the dispute centre and select the incorrect account or field. State the exact problem—for example, “Account fully repaid but status remains active.”

CIBIL will review and route the dispute to the concerned lender. Any correction depends on the lender’s confirmation. CIBIL says dispute resolution may take approximately 30 days, subject to the lender’s response.

Step 6: Track both references

Save the lender complaint number, CIBIL dispute ID, emails, attachments and dates. These records are important if you need to escalate the matter.

Step 7: Check a refreshed report

Do not rely only on an email saying the issue was resolved. Refresh or download the report and verify the status, balance, overdue amount and closure date.

What If the Status Says “Settled” Instead of “Closed”?

These words are not interchangeable.

StatusSimple meaning
ActiveThe account is being reported as open
ClosedThe loan has been reported as fully closed
SettledThe lender accepted less than the full contractual dues as settlement
Written-offThe lender reported the unpaid amount as a loss under its process

If your report says settled, do not raise a dispute claiming it should be closed unless you have evidence that the full required amount was paid or the lender has agreed to change the status. Contact the lender, ask for the account statement and discuss what action—if any—is available. Never pay someone who promises a guaranteed CIBIL status change.

What If the Lender Does Not Resolve the Complaint?

First escalate through the lender’s official grievance process. Keep proof of the date on which you first complained.

If the complaint concerns an entity covered under the RBI Ombudsman framework and the entity rejects it, gives an unsatisfactory response or does not reply within the applicable period, you may be able to file a complaint through the RBI Complaint Management System. The RBI’s published guidance explains that its Ombudsman mechanism provides cost-free redress for eligible complaints involving regulated entities when the complaint is not satisfactorily resolved or is not answered within 30 days.

The correct route can depend on who the lender is and whether the entity is covered. Do not describe the loan app as the lender unless your agreement says so.

Can You Receive Compensation for a Delayed Correction?

Under the credit-information complaint framework, eligible complainants may receive ₹100 per calendar day when a complaint about inaccurate credit information is not resolved within 30 calendar days from its initial filing with a credit institution or credit information company.

This does not mean every loan that remains active for more than 30 days automatically earns compensation. The important date is generally the filing date of the complaint or dispute, and the facts must fall within the framework. An unsatisfactory outcome by itself is not the same as delayed resolution. Keep the initial complaint acknowledgement and ask the responsible institution about compensation if resolution exceeds the permitted time.

A Simple Real-World Example

Suppose Meera pays her final personal-loan EMI on 3 June. On 12 June, she downloads her report and sees the account marked active. The Date Reported is 31 May—before her final payment.

Meera does not immediately assume fraud. She downloads the NOC, saves her payment receipt and waits for the lender’s update. When a later report still shows active, she emails the lender with the documents and receives a complaint number. She also raises a CIBIL dispute and saves that reference.

The lender verifies the closure and sends corrected information. Meera then refreshes her report and checks that the status is closed, the balance is zero and the closure date is correct.

This example is illustrative, but it shows the right order: check, document, complain, dispute and verify.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I upload my NOC to CIBIL and get the status changed?

You can provide accurate details while raising a dispute, but CIBIL cannot independently change lender-reported information without confirmation from the relevant lender. Contact the lender as well.

How long does a closed loan take to update in CIBIL?

It may not appear immediately. CIBIL’s consumer guidance advises allowing time for recent payments or closure information to be reported and notes that disputes may take approximately 30 days, depending on the lender’s response. Check the Date Reported before deciding your next step.

Will a closed loan disappear from my CIBIL report?

Not necessarily. Closed accounts can remain as part of your credit history. What matters is that the status, balance, payment history and closure date are accurate.

What if a digital loan appears under an unfamiliar lender name?

Check your loan agreement and Key Facts Statement. A loan taken through an app may be funded by a partner bank or NBFC, whose name can appear in the report.

A loan showing active after repayment can be frustrating, but the solution is easier when you follow the right sequence: check the dates and fields, collect proof, contact the actual lender, raise a precise dispute and verify the correction yourself.
