Reviewed by: WeCredit Research Team

NSFDC (National Scheduled Castes Finance and Development Corporation) gives concessional loans to Scheduled Caste entrepreneurs whose annual family income is up to Rs. 5 lakh. Term loans go up to Rs. 45 lakh at 8% a year for the borrower, and you apply through a state channelising agency or the PM-SURAJ portal, never to NSFDC directly.

Quick answer: if you belong to the Scheduled Caste community, hold a valid caste certificate and your family income is within Rs. 5 lakh, pick the scheme that fits your project cost, then apply online on PM-SURAJ or at your state channelising agency. WeCredit does not sanction government scheme loans. Confirm current details on the NSFDC website before you apply.

Who Can Apply: Eligibility

  • You must belong to the Scheduled Caste community and hold a valid caste certificate issued by the competent authority.
  • Annual family income from all sources must not exceed Rs. 5 lakh. This applies in both rural and urban areas from 7 January 2026. Older NSFDC papers show Rs. 3 lakh, so check you are reading a current page.
  • Individuals, partnership firms and co-operative societies can borrow for income-generating activities. In a firm or society, every member must be Scheduled Caste and each member’s family income must stay within the limit.
  • Eligibility checks are done by the channelising agency, and NSFDC can re-verify any applicant later.
  • Skill development training has no income criterion, but that is separate from the loan schemes.

NSFDC is one of several national corporations for specific communities. If you are not Scheduled Caste, the NBCFDC loan for OBC works on a similar channelising-agency model for backward classes.

NSFDC Loan Schemes and Interest Rates

NSFDC does not lend to you directly. It funds the channelising agency at a lower rate, and the agency lends to you at the rate below. These are the terms on the NSFDC scheme page, matching the Ministry of Social Justice data as on 28 February 2026.

Older NSFDC material used the names Suvidha and Utkarsh for the two ticket sizes of the Term Loan. If a lender or agent quotes those names or a 9% rate, ask which scheme document they are using and compare it with the current scheme page.

Worked Example: Rs. 5 Lakh Term Loan

Say a tailoring unit costs Rs. 5.6 lakh. NSFDC funds up to 90%, so the loan can be up to about Rs. 5.04 lakh, and you borrow Rs. 5 lakh. You arrange the balance yourself. Repayment is in quarterly instalments over seven years including the six-month moratorium, so assume roughly 26 instalments. The numbers below are an illustration, not a sanction.

ItemIllustration
Loan amountRs. 5,00,000
Rate to borrower8% a year (2% a quarter)
Instalments26 equal quarterly instalments
Approximate quarterly instalmentRs. 24,850
Total repaidAbout Rs. 6.46 lakh
Approximate interestAbout Rs. 1.46 lakh

The agency sets the exact schedule and the way interest during the moratorium is treated, so your figure may differ. Ask for the repayment schedule in writing before you sign.

Documents to Keep Ready

NSFDC names the core papers and leaves the full checklist to each agency. Prepare these, then ask your agency for its own list:

  • Valid caste certificate issued by the competent authority
  • Income proof showing annual family income within Rs. 5 lakh
  • KYC documents such as Aadhaar and PAN
  • Project details or quotation for the activity you want to fund
  • Bank account details for disbursal
  • Any further documents on the agency’s checklist, for example partnership deed or society registration for firms and co-operatives

How to Apply: Step by Step

  1. Choose the scheme by project cost using the table above.
  2. Open the PM-SURAJ portal at pmsuraj.dosje.gov.in and register with a valid mobile number. An OTP confirms it.
  3. Fill in the standard application form and upload scanned copies of your documents.
  4. Save the Application ID the system generates and use it to track your proposal.
  5. Prefer paper? Submit the application at the district branch or head office of the state channelising agency, with the caste certificate, income proof and KYC documents.
  6. Answer the agency’s queries and attend any verification. The agency decides on the application and handles disbursal.

Do not send applications to NSFDC itself. Its pages state that direct contact from applicants is not entertained, and that every application must come through a state channelising agency or other channelising agency.

Women Borrowers and Skill Training

NSFDC states that 40% of the funds under the Term Loan and Micro Finance schemes are targeted for women beneficiaries. This is a funding target, not a separate scheme, so women applicants follow the same eligibility, documents and application route as everyone else.

NSFDC also supports skill development training for Scheduled Castes aged 18 to 45 under PM-DAKSH, with a stipend of Rs. 1,500 a month paid by direct benefit transfer where attendance is 80% or above. Training has no income criterion. The 18 to 45 age band is stated for training only, and NSFDC’s loan pages do not state an age limit, so ask your agency whether it applies one.

What Happens After You Apply

  • Your application is received by the channelising agency, either through PM-SURAJ or at its branch.
  • The agency verifies your caste certificate, income proof and KYC. Verification is the agency’s responsibility, and NSFDC can re-verify later.
  • The agency appraises the project and decides whether to sanction the loan within the scheme terms.
  • If sanctioned, you receive the loan terms, the rate, the instalment schedule and the moratorium. Read them before accepting.
  • Quarterly instalments begin after the moratorium period under your scheme ends.

Processing time is not stated on the NSFDC pages, so ask the agency for an expected timeline and track your Application ID on PM-SURAJ.

Is the NSFDC Loan Right for You? A Quick Checklist

  • I belong to the Scheduled Caste community and have a valid certificate.
  • My family’s annual income from all sources is within Rs. 5 lakh.
  • My project costs up to Rs. 50 lakh and I can arrange the rest of the cost.
  • I can repay in quarterly instalments from my business income.
  • I have identified my state channelising agency or bank partner.

If you tick most of these boxes, shortlist the scheme band that matches your project cost and ask your agency for its exact rate and paperwork before you commit.

Common Mistakes

  • Treating an agent’s quoted rate as official. Ask for the scheme document and compare it with the NSFDC scheme page.
  • Paying anyone to speed up approval. Applications go through PM-SURAJ or the agency, and the NSFDC helpline is 1800110396.
  • Borrowing the full 90% when cash flow is tight. Quarterly instalments start once the moratorium ends.
  • Using old rate tables. Rates and income limits have changed in recent years.
  • Skipping the written repayment schedule.
