PM Vidyalaxmi Education Loan: Eligibility and How to Apply

8–12 minutes

Reviewed by: WeCredit Research Team

PM-Vidyalaxmi is a central government scheme that helps students admitted on merit to a listed top institution get a collateral-free, guarantor-free education loan from a bank. The government guarantees 75% of the loan for amounts up to Rs. 7.5 lakh, and students with family income up to Rs. 8 lakh get a 3% interest subvention on loans up to Rs. 10 lakh.

Quick answer: you apply on the PM-Vidyalaxmi portal (pmvidyalaxmi.co.in), fill one common application and pick up to three banks. The bank sanctions the loan, not the government. WeCredit does not sanction government scheme loans, so confirm current details on the official portal and with your bank before you apply.

How PM-Vidyalaxmi Works

PM-Vidyalaxmi is not a separate lender. Banks and other regulated lenders give the loan. The government adds two supports on top: a credit guarantee that protects the lender if the loan defaults, and an interest subvention that pays part of the interest for eligible students. The guarantee does not reduce what you owe. You remain responsible for repaying the loan in full.

One simplified application on a single portal is used by all participating banks. As of a PIB release dated 27 July 2026, 64 lenders were onboarded: 12 public sector banks, 20 private banks, 25 regional rural banks and 7 cooperative banks. By 21 July 2026, 1,12,817 loans worth Rs. 15,634.78 crore had been sanctioned under the scheme.

Who Is Eligible

  • You must be admitted on your own merit, through an open competitive exam or merit-based selection, to a QHEI. Management quota and NRI quota admissions are excluded.
  • The course must be a degree or diploma course, including integrated courses. Students from all income groups can apply for the loan itself.
  • QHEIs are chosen from NIRF rankings: the top 100 private and central institutions, the top 200 state or UT government institutions, and all other central government institutions. The list covers 1,425 institutions and is refreshed from the latest NIRF rankings.
  • Foreign institutions and foreign campuses are not covered.
  • You register using Aadhaar, must stay enrolled, and from the second year must keep satisfactory academic performance to continue receiving the subvention.
  • The subvention and guarantee benefits can be used only once, for one undergraduate, postgraduate or integrated course.
  • For the 3% subvention, annual family income must be up to Rs. 8 lakh, and you must not be receiving another scholarship, interest subvention or fee reimbursement.

Up to one lakh fresh students a year can receive the 3% subvention, and the Cabinet note gives preference to students at government institutions taking technical or professional courses. If your institution is not on the QHEI list, a different route may suit you, such as an agency loan like the NMDFC education loan for minority students.

Interest Subvention: What You Actually Get

The 3% subvention applies during the moratorium period. For a loan above Rs. 10 lakh, it applies only to the disbursed principal up to Rs. 10 lakh. The government credits the benefit to your PM-Vidyalaxmi Digital Rupee wallet after the bank submits its claim, and when you choose to redeem it the amount goes to your education loan account by direct benefit transfer.

A separate scheme, PM-USP CSIS, gives full interest subvention during the moratorium to students with family income up to Rs. 4.5 lakh studying technical or professional courses, on loans up to Rs. 10 lakh. Interest you pay on an education loan also qualifies for a tax deduction under Section 80E.

Worked Example: Rs. 8 Lakh Loan for a Four-Year Course

This example uses assumed numbers to show how the benefits work. Your bank’s actual rate and disbursal schedule will differ.

StepAssumption or result
Loan amountRs. 8,00,000, no collateral, no guarantor
Government guarantee75% of the loan, which is Rs. 6,00,000, protects the bank against default. You still owe the full loan
Moratorium4-year course plus 1 year, which is 5 years
3% subvention, upper bound3% of Rs. 8,00,000 is Rs. 24,000 a year. Over 5 years that is at most Rs. 1,20,000 if the full amount were disbursed on day one. Staged disbursals mean the real figure is lower
Repayment after moratorium (assumed 9% a year, 10 years)EMI of about Rs. 10,134 on Rs. 8,00,000, ignoring interest that builds up during the moratorium. The 3% subvention covers only part of that interest, so the balance can be higher than Rs. 8,00,000 when repayment starts

Documents You Will Need

The final list is set by the bank. Canara Bank’s scheme page lists the following, and other banks ask for similar items:

  • Completed loan application with two passport-size photographs
  • Identity and address proof under KYC norms, with Aadhaar and PAN
  • Self-attested mark sheets of earlier exams
  • Admission proof: offer letter, admission letter or entrance exam result
  • Fee schedule or cost statement from the institution
  • Family income certificate issued by an authorised State Government authority, needed for the subvention
  • Details of a co-borrower, generally a parent or guardian

How to Apply: Step by Step

  1. Check that your institution is on the QHEI list and that you were admitted on merit.
  2. Register on pmvidyalaxmi.co.in with your email and mobile number.
  3. Fill in the common application with your course, fees, loan amount and family income details.
  4. Select up to three banks.
  5. Upload your admission letter, fee structure, identity proof and income certificate.
  6. The bank assesses the application and may ask for more information. Aadhaar-based de-duplication checks that only eligible students receive the subvention.
  7. On sanction, the bank shares the terms. Disbursal goes to the institution in stages against its demand letters.
  8. You get an SMS to install the PM-Vidyalaxmi Digital Rupee App, where the subvention is credited.

Canara Bank’s page also mentions a portal fee of Rs. 200 plus GST and no bank processing charges. Check the fee and charges with your own bank before paying.

Is PM-Vidyalaxmi Right for You? Checklist

  • My institution appears on the current QHEI list.
  • I was admitted on merit, not under management or NRI quota.
  • My course is a degree or diploma course in India.
  • My family income is up to Rs. 8 lakh, if I want the 3% subvention.
  • I am not already getting another scholarship, subvention or fee reimbursement.
  • I have Aadhaar, PAN and an income certificate ready.
  • My co-borrower’s credit record is in good shape.

If you can tick the first three, you can apply for the loan whatever your family income, though the bank still decides on sanction. The last four decide whether you also get the subvention and how smoothly the bank processes the file.

Why Applications Stall and How to Fix Them

ReasonWhat to do
Admission under management or NRI quotaThese admissions are excluded. Consider a standard bank education loan or an agency loan instead
Institution not on the QHEI list, or a foreign institutionCheck the current list on the portal before applying. Foreign institutions are not covered
Family income above Rs. 8 lakhYou can still apply for the loan, but the 3% subvention will not apply
Already receiving another scholarship, subvention or fee reimbursementSubvention benefits are not available alongside these. Choose the benefit that helps you more
Missing or mismatched documentsMatch names and details across Aadhaar, PAN, marksheets and the income certificate. Banks can cancel a loan if documents are not submitted
Co-applicant’s credit historyBanks assess an adverse credit history of the co-applicant case by case under their own policy. Discuss this with the branch early

Common Mistakes

  • Assuming every college qualifies. Only listed QHEIs are covered, and the list changes with the NIRF rankings.
  • Thinking the guarantee clears your debt. It protects the bank, and you still repay the loan.
  • Expecting subvention above Rs. 10 lakh of principal. It is capped at that amount.
  • Applying to only one bank. The portal lets you choose up to three.
  • Using lookalike websites. Apply only on pmvidyalaxmi.co.in, and never pay an agent to get the loan sanctioned.
