Udyam Registration: Free Process, Documents and Steps
Reviewed by: WeCredit Research Team
Udyam registration is the Government of India’s free, online registration for micro, small and medium enterprises. You file it yourself on udyamregistration.gov.in with your Aadhaar and, where it applies, PAN and GSTIN, and you get an e-certificate with a Udyam Registration Number.
Quick answer: registration costs nothing, and no agent is authorised to do it for you. WeCredit does not sanction government scheme loans or issue Udyam certificates. Confirm current details on udyamregistration.gov.in before you apply.

Who Can Register and Whose Aadhaar Is Used
The registration form asks for Aadhaar of the person who stands for the enterprise. For a proprietorship that is the proprietor, for a partnership the managing partner, and for a Hindu Undivided Family the karta. For a company, LLP, cooperative society, society or trust, the authorised signatory provides Aadhaar, and PAN and GSTIN are entered as the CGST Act requires.
MSME Size Limits from 1 April 2025
The portal shows these limits, which come from the revised criteria announced in Union Budget 2025-26. The category depends on both investment and turnover.
| Category | Investment up to | Turnover up to |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | Rs 2.5 crore | Rs 10 crore |
| Small | Rs 25 crore | Rs 100 crore |
| Medium | Rs 125 crore | Rs 500 crore |
The portal picks up investment and turnover figures from PAN and GST linked data, so your tax records should match what you declare.
What You Need Before You Start
- Aadhaar number of the proprietor, managing partner, karta or authorised signatory, with the mobile number linked to it for OTP.
- PAN, and GSTIN where the CGST Act applies to your business.
- Basic enterprise details you will self-declare in the form, such as the business name and activity.
The portal does not ask you to upload documents. Follow the screens on the portal for anything further it asks.
How to Register: Step by Step
- Open udyamregistration.gov.in and check the address in your browser. It is the only official site.
- Choose the new registration form for an enterprise that is not registered yet.
- Enter the Aadhaar number and complete the OTP verification.
- Enter PAN and GSTIN as asked. The portal checks them online.
- Fill in the enterprise details and submit the self-declaration.
- Save your Udyam Registration Number and print the e-certificate from the portal.
Why Lenders and Schemes Ask for It
A Udyam number is a government record of your business and its size category. Banks and scheme portals often use it to confirm that you run a micro, small or medium enterprise. Whether a particular lender or scheme requires it varies, so ask the lender. It is also useful when you read about MUDRA, CGTMSE or the JanSamarth portal. See our Mudra loan guide, MSME online apply guide and government business loan eligibility guide. Registration does not guarantee a loan.
Udyam vs Other Routes
| Udyam registration | A government scheme loan | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A free registration of your enterprise | Credit from a lender under a scheme’s rules |
| Who decides | Self-declaration with online checks | The lender, after the scheme’s checks |
| Cost | No fee | Rates and fees set by lenders and the scheme |
Common Mistakes
- Paying an agent or website. The portal says no private system, service, agency or person is authorised to do MSME registration.
- Filing a second registration for the same enterprise. Only one is allowed. Add activities to the existing one.
- Declaring investment or turnover that does not match your PAN and GST records.
- Using an Aadhaar number with no working linked mobile number, which blocks the OTP step.
- Not updating the registration when your business details change.
